<image:caption>The Diane de Poitiers Garden, overlooked by the Chancery cottage, seen here covered in foliage. This cottage served as the residence of Catherine de’ Medici’s steward. The unique floating parterres now feature a raised metal edge traditionally filled with Santolina chamaecyparissus (lavender cotton) yet seen here filled with gravel chips at the time of our visit. I love how the weathering steel of the edging is used here to highlight the purple hues of the cottages windows, and is accentuated further by the purple foliage of the annual planting. Together with the purple hibiscus standards they leave a satisfyingly monochromatic impression.</image:caption>

<image:caption>View of Chenonceau from the southern bank of the Cher river (Tour de Marques seen on the left). Because the castle sits as a bridge over the river itself, it was limited in size and was often considered too small and cramped for its royal residents.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The original 12th century fortress was demolished save for its dungeons, the Tour des Marques (right), named after its medieval residents the Marques family. Its foundations serve now as an entrance courtyard, the Terrasse des Marques, for the present chateau (left) which was built over the Cher in 1517.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Looking north towards the Platanus allée, the axis created by its pathway leads between the Tours de Marques and Terrasse de Marques straight into the castle’s entrance. Although lacking in the perfect symmetry of Italian renaissance schemes, it achieves a similar intent of creating a crescendo towards the entryway.</image:caption>

A grouping of blade-leaved plants (Phormium sp.) countered by the spike-like inflorescences of the spent Veronica sp. at the center of the image creates contrast and provides a counter-balance to both soften and focus the bench as a point of emphasis. And how can you ever go wrong with a splash of Verbena bonariensis?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Original P-Patch growing media. As you can see the soil is very sandy and loose, in contrast with the heavy clay soil I had in my Iowa garden. A good soil loam will have a balance between sand, clay, and silt. An easy way to test your soil's texture is to wet the soil, then try to make a ball with your fist. If it falls apart, you have sand. If it sticks together, you have clay.</image:caption>

<image:title>Research - Plants in time: How to plan for species turnover over multiple successional stages to promote long-term diversity - Gardens are dynamic</image:title>
<image:caption>Too often landscapes are designed in a static manner, conceptualized both aesthetically and operationally in ways that do not allow for natural community assembly processes to take place. Through a functional understanding of these processes, there is a potential for informed designers to shape the future trajectory of plant communities, prevent undesirable plant invasions, and promote long-term biodiversity. Functional trait approaches can help develop tools to work with the underpinning sub-processes of succession, effectively scaling from plant traits to ecosystems.</image:caption>

<image:caption>FIG 3-1 Summary of community assembly models. Community assembly models vary in the dominance of their controlling filters. Recognized community assembly models include (1) patch-dynamic, (2) species-sorting, (3) mass-effect, and (4) sparse. Each filter can be conceptualized as a fitness test, comparing the site-community’s functional state to the candidate’s functional traits. Through this process, the site-community selects for fitting candidates, and the resulting functionally fit population pool can either modify the filter parameters (if its recruitment results in de-stabilizing per capita effects) or stabilize the community. Note recruitment is depicted at the phenotype level, which includes both intra- and inter-specific trait variation (Violle et al. 2012). Site-community functional states are detectable at the patch scale (Messier et al. 2010).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Taking a second look at the HBM in context with functional guilds. High community productivity (1) corresponds with highest fitness for competitors (C). Low productivity caused by high disturbance (3) corresponds with highest fitness for ruderals (R). When low productivity is caused by high stress (2) it corresponds with highest fitness for stress-tolerators (S). Under intermediate productivity ranges, generalists equalize investments across both the economic and size spectra such that niche difference, rather than fitness, controls diversity (4).</image:caption>
